Specialty

Choosing the best doctor for your needs is important. There are numerous types of specialization focuses that a doctor can choose from. Depending on your diagnosis, not only should you have a primary care physician, but also the doctor(s) that will be most qualified to be part of your care team.

If you currently have speciality doctors in your pediatric care team, it is probably safe to assume that these are the types of doctors that you will want to have in your adult healthcare team.

Understands Your Diagnosis

Just because a doctor specializes in something related to your diagnosis, does not always mean that they understand your specific diagnosis. This is not always a bad thing, but sometimes when a doctor does not have the knowledge they need to provide you with the best care, you may need to seek additional or different care from a doctor that does understand your diagnosis.

Comfort

It is important that you are comfortable with all of your healthcare team. Being comfortable with them is what will allow you to address your needs and concerns to the fullest in order to get the best care. Even though doctors are professionals, it is okay to find another doctor to continue your care if you are uncomfortable with that doctor.

Treats You with Dignity & Respect

You are a human being. You have a right to direct your care. Advocate for your needs and desires. Your doctor should speak with you and allow your opinions and choices to be heard and carried out.

Your doctor is a professional and should treat you with dignity and respect. Not being treated with dignity and respect calls for reporting this doctor and seeking care from someone else.
